with Eleonora Duse and Febo Mari Cenere, (which in Italian means Ashes,) features the renowned star in a somber tale of a mother giving up her child in the hope that he will find a better life without her. Later, he wants to establish a new life with his wife and have his long lost mother join them, but first must find her. His search takes him to a tiny village where he discovers her disgraced and living in poverty. She thinks herself unworthy of her son’s love, and in a surprising twist, fate deals a tragic blow soon after they reunite. Eleonora attempted to do with her performance in this film something that no other actor or actress had done in motion pictures up to that time: perform in understated, pure pantomime. While other actors in silent films spoke to characters as they would in real life, even though their words went unrecorded, she chose to play her role without using lip movements, relying on nothing but facial expressions, body language, and the subtlest of gestures.
Running time is approximately 30 minutes. Silent film with orchestra score.
This 90-year-old film is one of the earliest feature-length films from the silent era, and the quality is below standard, which is common for films of this vintage. However, the image, subtitles, and sound are quite clear and very enjoyable.
